Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the most famous marine-protected area in the world and the largest UNESCO World Heritage area. Covering a geographical area of 35 million hectares (86 million acres) and stretching approximately 2300km along the coast of north-eastern Australia from Bundaberg to Cape York, the Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world and home to approximately 400 different types of corals. It is also an area of outstanding natural beauty and home to around 1500 different species of fish, 4000 types of mollusc and many endangered species.

More than 30 historic shipwrecks and a number of archaeological sites from the Aborigines invite scuba divers to unforgettable underwater adventures...

Climate: You can dive there all year round. The water temperature ranges from 22 oC in June rising up to 28 oC in March. January, February and March are almost the warmest months and also the wettest

Best time to visit: Actually there is no bad time to dive the Great Barrier Reef. But some divers say that diving is at its best between August and December. The coral spawning in March and April is also a good time to visit as this is when the big pelagics like whale sharks arrive

 

Things to do: You can swim, snorkel, dive or sail the Great Barrier Reef. There is also a variety of boat tours and cruises that are offered, from single day trips, to longer voyages
